If you’re planning a getaway to Palm Springs and wondering what the fashion scene is like – you’re not alone! With the streets lined with palm trees and pastel-colored buildings, this city was designed for glamor! But with temperatures soaring into the triple digits, it can be tough to know what essentials to pack for your trip.
If you’re like most people, the phrase “what to wear in Palm Springs” probably brings to mind images of mid-century modern style and Rat-Pack glamour. And while it’s definitely true that Palm Springs is a mecca for vintage fashion lovers, there’s no need to feel limited!
With a bit of creativity, you can put together an outfit that’s both stylish and perfectly suited to the desert climate. If you want to rep that “Palm Springs” charm, then here are some basic styling tips:
The days are typically hot and sunny, so light clothing is an absolute must. Things like skirts, dresses, and shorts are all perfect for daytime temperatures that can easily reach triple digits.
Sandals or flip-flops are the best footwear choice for lounging by the pool, but you’ll want to pack your sneakers for walking around downtown.
If you’re looking for something with a little more coverage from the sun but still stay cool, try a maxi dress, maxi skirt, or breezy blouse.
And don’t forget to pack sunscreen! The sun can be extreme in Palm Springs. You’ll also need some accessories that provide sun protection. This includes a cute pair of sunglasses, a fun hat, and even a retro umbrella!
If you’re heading to a nightclub or casino, you’re probably wondering how dressed up or dressed down you should be for the Palm Springs nightlife.
Palm Springs is “resort casual,” meaning your going-out attire should be cute and stylish but comfortable. It is a desert after all, and no one wants to be miserable in a thick-fabric’ed ballgown.
Some ideas include:
From lazy pool days at a luxury resort to epic pool parties, there are plenty of swimming opportunities in this desert oasis.
From trendy bikinis, and flowy coverups, to classic one-pieces, you’ll want to be rocking your best fit while vacationing in Palm Springs.
It is best to wear light, long layers, keeping your body cool but also protecting you from the hot desert sun.
Summer in Palm Springs can be uncomfortably warm, with highs in the mid-100s and lows in the high 70s. Keeping that in mind, you’re going to be sweating!
To stay cool, pack your skimpy clothes! Think light, breezy dresses, shorts, rompers, and tank tops. If you’re planning on spending most of the day outside, remember to wear sunscreen and consider wearing something to cover your face, neck, and shoulders.
Winter temperatures in Palm Springs are surprisingly comfortable, ranging from the mid-70s during the day. In the evenings, however, the temperatures can drop well into the 40’s! So plan on bringing a light sweater or jacket if you go out at night.
Jumpsuits & Rompers: Lightweight jumpsuits and rompers are a great way to combat the Palm Springs desert heat while still making a fashion statement! You can find ones in light fabrics and even in fun, retro patterns and colors!
Breezy Blouses: Finding cool and breathable fabrics is KEY!
Flowy Skirts: Find lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton that will let air flow through. The sticky sweat is real here!
Stylish Sun Protection: Accessories can make all the difference when packing for a Palm Springs vacation! Think fun sunglasses, hats, and shawls.
Swimsuits: Bring multiple!
Beachy Dresses: Just remember, the more lightweight, the better!
Shoes: Sandals, flip-flops, and sneakers – bring a pair of flip-flops for the pool, a nice pair of sandals for going out, and sneakers for walking around downtown.
Towel or Sarong: Bring this with you while laying out by the pool. If you take a dip, the towel will come in handy so you’re not dripping wet across the hotel lobby!
Sunscreen: I cannot stress enough how much sun protection is essential! The desert sun’s UV rays are no joke!
Beach Bag: Bring a stylish beach bag to help carry all your travel essentials! I love straw bags and bright, colorful ones for the pool!
Cooling Towels. These cooling towels are a GAME CHANGER for keeping cool in the desert. Simply soak the towel in cold water, wring it out, then plop it on your neck for all-day cooling!
Personal Fan or Misting Fan. A personal fan can relieve you from the hot, smoldering sun.
Small Umbrella. I was actually surprised by how little shade there was in Palm Springs. Bringing a small umbrella will help protect your skin from the intense UV rays!
